LAG-

A shot in which a ball is driven to the top rail and back towards the bottom rail in order to land as close as possible to that bottom rail. It's a procedure used to determine the starting player of game.

The lag is the very first shot in many billiards matches, determining who breaks and thus gaining the crucial initial advantage. To execute a winning lag, the goal is to send your ball from behind the head string to the foot rail, and have it return to rest as close to the head rail as possible without touching it or crossing over the head string. Key tips include hitting the cue ball slightly above center with a very gentle, controlled stroke; this generates a bit of follow, allowing the ball to roll smoothly and consistently, minimizing drag, and helping it to die softly near the head rail. Aiming for the ball to lightly kiss the foot rail, rather than hitting it hard and bouncing off, typically yields better results for coming back close. Practice is paramount for developing the delicate touch and speed control required, as even subtle variations in cloth or ball conditions can impact the lag.
